Nourish Recipe: Pear-Applesauce

Pear-Applesauce

This recipe is a favorite as a side for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is also a treat in school lunches. For a sweeter version, you can add raw local honey when blending. To increase the fiber value of this recipe even further, I sometimes keep some of the raw apple skins and add them to the blender when we add all of the other ingredients. It fully incorporates and creates a nice consistency.

Enjoy the flavors and scents of fall!

Yield: Apx 5 cups | Prep time: 20 mins | Cook time: 20 mins

Ingredients:

  • 5 large apples, peeled, cored, and chopped into medium pieces

  • 3 large pears, peeled, cored, and chopped into medium pieces

  • 1 cup apple juice or water

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

  • ½ lemon squeezed (apx 1 Tablespoon)

  • Sprinkle of cinnamon to taste

How to:

  1. Put apple pieces, pear pieces, juice, vanilla, and (optional) nutmeg into a large, heavy-bottom pot over a low-medium heat and simmer for approximately 20 minutes, until you can easily pierce them with a fork.

  2. Once the fruit is done, set aside and let cool for about 15 minutes.

  3. Once cooled, place the fruit mixture into the blender and puree until smooth.

  4. Sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.

Serve warm or cold, and enjoy!

This will keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.
